Artist Village: Kacey Johansing

San Francisco is the prolific epicenter for cultivating music as well as maintaining a  culture bred to consume it. This city is notorious for spitting out bright and talented musicians, which brought no surprise to hear Kacey Johansing and then discover she bases her music, and her home, in the Bay.  And it is within this hindsight that exploits the beautiful folk rhythm of her music. Her voice is nostalgic, reminding its listeners of a very coffee shop like atmosphere, but also in its melodies suggests so much more. Kacey’s voice is almost a more melodic and poetic Norah Jones, but more fulfilling and touching because the music it sings to accompanies it so well. On her Myspace page, Kacey lists her genre as Healing & Easy Listening. The definition is faultless.

Her style: relentless. I enjoy her very poetic and romantic track titledAngel Island” as the song is a straightforward assertion of a woman’s past and present desire for a man. Her words are endearing and emotional (“You remind me of happiness”) but simultaneously grateful and pensive (“You remind me of the darkness too”). The pleasant demeanor, coupled with delicate guitar riffs and intriguing maracas, solidifies this track as nothing but enjoyable. Her voice and ambience seem to direct toward a more somber and melancholy environment in “Sleepwalk”, as deep pianos accompanied by gloomy violins typify this release. Kacey’s voice adjusts accordingly to continue with the sophistication and guide the lyrics into a picturesque image of San Franciscan love affairs.

Kacey Johansing’s soft, melodic folk rhythm helps quell the gloomy depression of overcast winter days but simultaneously lingers amidst sunny afternoons. Her duality is ingenious and her sound intriguing. Her debut album, Many Seasons, was released in 2010 for her local San Franciscans.
